*****UPDATE!******* 4/3/06

It seems that the NEW firmware update 1.1.1 has finally fixed the video freezing problem. SO please try out the new update 1.1.1 before going through all the trouble of going back to 1.0.

There is no real reason to upgrade to firmware 1.1 on your video ipod unless you plan on buying and using the new FM tuner.

It breaks a lot of PC transcoded video content for your iPod.

A lot of people are reporting broken audio or black screens on previously playable movies and shows that were transcoded by individuals with programs such as Videora. So warning!!! if you upgrade your firmware to 1.1 and it breaks a bunch of videos the only way to get them to play again is to either encode them with quicktime or DOWNGRADE your firmware. Which of course means a complete wipe and reset of the ipod.

There is a huge thread on iLounge about this if you want to read for yourself

http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t...ghlight=videora

Useful post in that thread for those that want to downgrade and not lose their info on the ipod

Downgrade without lose all the content in the ipod:

Put the ipod in harddisk mode

edit the file (hidden folder and file)

\iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo

Replace the line that have the word "buildID" with this line:

buildID: 0x05908000 (6.0)

run iPod Updater 2005-11-17.exe or iPod Updater 2005-10-12.exe (both have the same software version for ipod video 5th generation)

iPod Updater 2005-11-17.exe can be downloaded from:

http URL
appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDWnw/iPodSetup.exe

Select upgrade (with this options you dont delete the songs or videos inside the ipod, if you select restore you lose all the content inside the ipod)

After that, you have your IPOD with version 1.0 and you can watch your videos without a problem again

Hope this can helps someone

Sorry about my bad english ;-)

Thanks for the tip. I had been holding off to see if there were any problems or not and I have ZERO interest in the FM tuner.

I don't have a video ipod (yet :-) ) but I've been holding off upgrading the firmware on my mini until I was sure it was "safe" because the last time, it screwed everything up. Does anyone know if there are problems with the latest "offer" that I get each time I sync?

ps... welcome to the pickle boards, CC!

That's kinda screwy! What does this mean for anyone who buys a 5g from now on? Will they need to downgrade as soon as they get it?

Oh yeah, welcome CC!

The software I use has been unaffected, but then again I did download the newest version of the software.

No clue, If they ship with the new update installed I would say yeah. Hopefully Apple will put out another firmware update that fixes the problem.

Its not even a bug!! The backlight function will never be able to be turned on or off by holding menu in future firmware updates.

How could they make such a stupid change!? ohmy.gif

Something that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that the problems do not affect 30 gig ipod owners. It's only the 60 gig owners that are experiencing the problems.

True, for the most part. Although there have been a few 30 gigers chime in over at the apple boards saying they are having the same problem.

/shrug I own a 30 and I havnt risked it, as it doesnt give me any benfits that I can tell to upgrade.

I have a 30g video ipod. I converted my videos in iTunes (WinXP) and then transferred it to my ipod...I get great video, but no sound with my videos on the pod. I realized they are muxed and I've read alot of forums...It came with ipod version 1.1 and I downgraded it to 1.0 figuring it would help, but it didnt....

How can I get sound with my video...and should i upgrade back to v1.1 if thats what came with it? should i try videora, even though there are problems about synchronization of the audio and video? Please help me...my frustration levels are higher than cheech and chong?

I havnt heard of that specific problem yet. Sounds like its something to do with AAC audio formating or something. What are the original file codecs your transcoding from?
I would get videora and try it. Its free. I've had no problems with sync problems with videora in the past. I still use it to transcode my movies and divx stuff.

So I downloaded videora and now it works fine...however, a new problem has emerged right before making this post. I want to add some songs to my ipod, but iTunes will not read my ipod....so i reset it with the usb plugged in still and now it just shows that its charged....but i still cannot get the "do not disconnect" screen....

Remove it from the computer and then..
reboot your ipod by turning HOLD on and then off then holding down the middle button and menu for like 30 seconds until you see the apple logo, should fix it.
